Read the entry from Jenny’s diary. Then answer the questions.

Dear Diary,

Today I start my second semester of college in Chicago. I like it here because there is a lot to do here. There are a lot of jazz concerts, and I love jazz music!

But I still miss Glendale Heights. I miss my parents and my younger brother. He says that he’s having a great time in high school, but he really wants to go to college here.

Well, at least I get to go to see my sister. She has a good job here. She’s an engineer. Sometimes we go out for dinner, or to the movies or concerts. It feels good to have an older sister!

Read the movie reviews. Then answer the questions.

Two new movies opened this weekend at the Cineplex 15. Local movie critic Danielle Moran reviewed them for What’s On? magazine.

Stolen Identity:

This movie is a sophisticated thriller about someone who gets information about people from the Internet, then commits crimes using the stolen identities. Can detective Carl White find the thief? It isn’t easy to figure out! I was guessing from beginning to end. And one scene in the middle- I won’t give it away!- had me on the edge of my seat. This movie isn’t as dramatic as Mystic Valley, the last thriller by director Carlos Herrera. The plot is interesting, but the characters are not very well developed. Still, if you like mysteries, you will probably enjoy this one.

Susie Spy:

This is a family movie that is fun for all ages. Susie Samuels is a 13-year-old amateur spy. She likes watching her neighbors and making up stories about them. But one day she sees something that she really can’t explain- and one of her best friends is involved.

Susie Spy is a great movie. It is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time, and it also has achingly tender moments. As a spy movie, it is interesting and fast-paced enough for children, but the humor and drama are sophisticated enough for adults, too. You won’t be bored by this film!

Read the article about an interesting job. Then answer the questions.

The world is full of weird and wonderful jobs. Have you ever heard of a “laughter therapist”? Well, such an occupation actually exists. We talked to Dr. Rich Weston, a specialist in laughter therapy. Dr. Weston, who started as a psychologist, has been in the business of laughter therapy since it was in its early stages about 25 years ago. He has seen a lot of changes, especially in the past five years. “More and more people these days are accepting the fact that laughter is wonderful for your health,” Dr. Weston says. “That really makes my job a whole lot easier.”

Laughter is now know to help the immune system, so it can actually help the body fight disease. It can also make people feel better emotionally. The sign above Dr. Weston’s door says, “I am not laughing because I am happy. I am happy because I am laughing.”

Dr. Weston holds sessions with patients who are having emotional problems or are going through a difficult situation. But instead of medicine, Dr. Weston prescribes laughter for his patients, in the form of comedy movies or television shows. And he tries to help them see the funny side of things that don’t seem very funny.

Dr. Weston also works outside of his office. He sometimes visits patients in the hospital. And recently, he started a “laughter club” in connection with his office. The laughter club works like a kind of day spa for people who want to laugh. A typical session in a laughter club starts with some breathing exercises; then people laugh for twenty minutes straight. People who go to these sessions come out feeling more relaxed, and they often laugh more throughout the day. “I’ve hired about 10 ‘laughter consultants’ so far, “ Dr. Weston says. “It’s great because they can lead groups, and I don’t need to be at each one. So there are a lot of more people helping others. And a lot more people know that we’re here to help!”
5
What was Dr. Weston’s original profession?
a
a medical doctor
b
a physical therapist
c
a psychologist
d
a comedian
5
What does Dr. Weston “prescribe” for his patients?
a

b

c
He advises them to go to the circus
d
He gives them CDs of recorded laughter
5
What do Dr. Weston’s laughter consultants do?
a

b
They lead laughter sessions for groups
c

d
They train doctors in laughter therapy

Read the article about a growing cultural movement. Then answer the questions.

Since the 1990s- some might say since even longer ago – the world has continued to become faster and faster in many different ways. The production of food is one changing aspect of a modernizing world. Large corporate farms are replacing small family farms, and food, now produced in mass quantities, has become much cheaper. Fast food – food that is inexpensive and served quickly (like hamburgers) – is everywhere now, continuing to rise in popularity despite the accompanying health concerns.

In response to this trend in eating, a movement has started to grow quietly but steadily. It started with an Italian man named Carlo Petrini. In 1986, Patrini began the Slow Food movement as a reaction against the increasing similarity of supermarkets all over the world. He wanted people to realize that they do have a choice – they do not have to eat fast food. He wanted to help people protect taste, culture, and the environment through their choice of food.

The movement quickly spread from Italy to neighboring European countries. An international organization was created in 1989, and now it has members on five continents.

Members of the Slow Food organization prefer to eat foods that are grown in their local community. They also want to protect the cultural diversity of food. And perhaps most of all, they want to sit down with their family and friends at the dinner table and enjoy their meal, rather than gulping it down in 5 minutes between other activities.

Although Slow Food is a small, quiet, and – well, slow – movement, it continues to draw people to its message. As the world becomes faster and faster, people are looking for small ways that they can slow things down a bit.
